Relax and Revitalise at Serenity Corner

Welcome to Serenity Corner

Hello! My name is Jennie Hutton and I am a fully qualified and insured AoR reflexologist.

After a lifelong interest in health and wellbeing, I have always appreciated the significant role holistic therapies can play in restoring and maintaining good health. However, it was an unexpected period of ill health that led me to experience reflexology and its benefits.

Like many people I am no stranger to the ups and downs of life, but after five years of intense personal and professional stress coinciding with the menopause and long Covid, ill health forced me to leave a 32-year career in media and communications. In short, adrenal burnout accompanied by a myriad of debilitating symptoms including anxiety, brain fog and feelings of overwhelm, left me with no option but to prioritise my self-care.

So, when a local reflexologist was recommended, I was keen to discover how it might help ease my symptoms.

In short, not only was reflexology pivotal in helping me restore good health and my zest for life, it also proved to be the catalyst for a mid-life career change and in 2022 I enrolled at the renowned Maureen Burgess School of Reflexology, an approved Association of Reflexologists training centre.

Association of Reflexologists

A reflexologist with the letters MAR after their name denotes they have full membership status of the Association of Reflexologists. This means therapists have to demonstrate they have met the strictest standards of professional excellence in reflexology practice, as well as committing to continually developing their skills and knowledge. They also agree to abide by the Association’s Code of Practice and have confirmed they are insured to practice.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive complimentary touch therapy which can help promote deep relaxation and feelings of wellbeing. By reducing the effects of stress it can be pivotal in optimising good health and building resilience.

Based on the theory that different points on the feet, hands, ears and face correspond with different areas of the body, reflexologists work areas with their thumb and fingers to help the body naturally balance and for overactive/underactive glands or organs to normalise.

History of Reflexology

The origins of reflexology can be traced back hundreds of years in India, China and Egypt where inscriptions were discovered on a physician’s tomb dating back 2,330 BC. However, it was not until the early 1990s that reflexology was introduced to the west through the work of Dr William Fitzgerald, an American who discovered zone therapy as practiced by the North American Indians. His work was built upon by Eunice Ingham, an American physiotherapist, who is often credited as being the pioneer of modern reflexology. The foot maps she created in 1930 are still used in many countries today.

“If you’re feeling out of kilter, don’t know why or what about, let your feet reveal the answer, find the sore sport, work it out,” Eunice Ingham.

The Impact Of Stress On Your Health

Are you:

- working longer hours?

- concerned about your work/life balance?

- overthinking on a regular basis?

- struggling getting to sleep or experiencing broken sleep?

- suffering from headaches, indigestion or tiredness?

These are all common signs of stress familiar to many in today’s fast paced world.

There is now growing evidence that long-term stress is responsible for many illnesses, but by making small lifestyle changes you can reduce its detrimental impact and improve your overall health and well-being

Benefits

Reflexology is a relaxing treatment and after one or two treatments, most people experience:

Reduced tension and anxiety

Increased relaxation

Improved sleep

Better mood

Greater sense of wellbeing

Other more individual aspects may also improve

Reflexology can be safely experienced alongside conventional medicine. By treating the whole person and not just the symptoms, a relaxing reflexology treatment aimed at improving a client's well-being may help support those living with illness.

Suitability

Reflexology is a therapy suitable for anyone at any age. But the only way to know how reflexology will help you, is if you try it!

There may be times when treatment is inappropriate, for instance if you have been diagnosed with blood clots. If you are unsure regarding any medical conditions, please call to discuss.

Note: Reflexology should not be used as an alternative to seeking medical advice. A well-trained reflexologist will not claim to cure, diagnose or prescribe.

What Can You Expect From A Treatment?

For your first visit, please allow 80 mins as a short medical history questionnaire will be completed whilst you relax with a herbal tea of your choice. Having an overview of your past and present health will help me to understand expectations and tailor the treatment to meet your physical and emotional needs.

Clients need only remove shoes and socks, but trousers should be wide enough so they can be comfortably pulled up to allow access to the ankle and lower calf.

Treatment commences with a short relaxation of both feet, before each foot is treated separately using a combination of finger and thumb movements, as well as applied pressure and holding specific reflex points. The treatment concludes with a further relaxing massage of the feet.

Whilst feet are more commonly treated, I also offer hand reflexology if people prefer.

Note: I am GDPR compliant. All personal data is treated confidentially and information is only used to support treatments.

What Can You Expect Post Treatment?

There will be an opportunity to discuss findings as well as frequency of follow-up treatments to achieve optimal results.

Clients will be encouraged to drink plenty of water to help flush out toxins both immediately after the treatment and for the rest of the day. To maximise the benefits of the reflexology, it is best to refrain from stimulants such as tea, coffee, alcohol, smoking or strenuous exercise on the day of treatment.

Self-help hand reflexology guides are provided for clients to play an active role in their well-being between appointments.
